As a futurist, my objective is to look ahead at the emerging technologies that will shape our world over the next 12 months. What technologies are gaining the most traction in business? What technology trends should business leaders be prepared for?
Read on for the five essential tech trends you should be following in 2023.
In 2023, AI will become more prevalent in organizations. With no-code AI, businesses of all sizes can use this easy drag-and-drop interface to put intelligence into their products and services. It seems like retail is the next industry to start using AI-enabled algorithms for recommendations. For example, Stitch Fix provides clothes based on a customer’s size and taste with its AI-enabled algorithm.
AI will become a necessary part of nearly every aspect of any business. The products they create, the way they manage and automate processes and functions, and even how customers interact with them. For example, we are already seeing cases where retailers use AI to facilitate automated inventory management. Ongoing developments like BOPAC (buy online pickup at curbside), BOPIS (buy online pickup in-store), and BORIS (buy online return in-store) will only become more common as AI is integrated into business operations across industries.
Blockchain technology will see great advances in 2023 as even more decentralized products and services come to the market.
For example, at the moment our data is stored in the cloud, but if we decentralize it and encrypt it using blockchain technology, not only will our information be safer than ever before, but we’ll also have innovative ways to quickly access and analyze it.
Quantum computing is emerging as the future of technology, and there’s a worldwide race to develop this technology on a large scale. The idea is that quantum computing will provide systems capable of processing information at a speed 1,000 times faster than traditional processors.
The danger of quantum computing is that it could render current encryption practices obsolete. One nation with a superior quantum computer, for example, could decode the encrypted communications of other nations and organizations. That’s something worth watching in 2023 as countries work on developing the technology.
Experts predict that in the year 2023, robots will become much more human-like. They’ll be used in the real world for event greeters, bartenders, concierges, and companions for seniors. Robots will also be able to perform complex tasks alongside humans in warehouses and factories.
One company is currently working to create a human-like robot that will work in homes. At Tesla AI Day in September 2022, Elon Musk revealed two Optimus humanoid robot prototypes. The company plans to take orders within the next 3 to 5 years and they can perform simple tasks like lifting objects and watering plants. Perhaps soon we’ll be able to have robots that assist around the house, doing simple tasks for us when we’re busy or not home.
In 2023, we’ll see a general trend toward more sustainability. As a result, tech such as smartphones, tablets, and computers will slowly transition to using more environmentally-friendly materials. Consumers will be more aware of where the components for these products come from, which will lead them to consider the waste their favorite gadgets produce.
